The movie Sarbjit is the biopic of Sarabjit Singh, who was an Indian national convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court. After a brief trial in the Lahore High Court he was condemned and sentenced to death in 1991, but the sentence was repeatedly postponed by the Government of Pakistan. While in prison in April 2013, he was attacked by fellow inmates and died six days later on May 2, 2013 at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.
It was a story of Sarbjit Singh, a farmer from Bhikhiwind in Punjab, who did not commit any crime, but languished in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail in Pakistan for 22 years. Sarabjit Singh’s elder sister, 61-year-old Dalbir Kaur spent more than 20 years of her life, hoping for her brother’s release from Pakistani prison. Her fight not only caught the attention of the entire nation, but also inspired filmmakers to make a film on Sarabjit Singh’s life, a life that he hardly lived.
